Organic Agriculture VS Conventional Agriculture

Advantage

  • Soils : In organic agriculture, soil enrichment practices are essential that benefit the fauna and flora of the soil, improve soil formation and structure, promoting more stable systems. In turn, the circulation of nutrients and energy is increased, and the soil's nutrient and water retention capacity improves.

  • Water : In many agricultural areas, contamination of groundwater streams with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is a major problem. As it is forbidden to use these substances in organic agriculture, they are replaced with organic fertilizers and by using these, the structure of the soil and water filtration are improved.

  • Ecological services : The repercussions of organic agriculture on natural resources favor an interaction with the agroecosystem vital for agricultural production and for nature conservation.

  • Biodiversity : By maintaining natural areas in and around crop fields, as well as not using chemical inputs and the use of natural agricultural methods, they provide a suitable habitat for wild flora and fauna and this helps to conserve biodiversity.

Disadvantages

  • Organically produced products are expensive : The reasons for the high prices are because the supply of organic food is small in quantity compared to the demand, the higher production costs of organic food, the strict processing and handling procedures , and their marketing, as well as the distribution chain, are comparatively inefficient.

  • Risk of exposure to biological contaminants: Post-harvest handling, that is, packaging, processing and storage, is where contamination of organic products can occur if not managed properly. Strict procedures must be followed to ensure that the quality of organic products is not affected.

  • Time-consuming : Organic farming requires a lot of commitment and patience. Organic farming focuses on potential social and environmental consequences by eliminating the use of synthetic inputs and being replaced by site-specific management observances that preserve and improve long-term soil fertility, animal and crop health , and in the prevention of pests and diseases that are highly labor and time intensive.

Advantage

  • It improves the profitability of the agricultural business for the entire agricultural sector for the benefit of farmers.

  • It tends to be more extensive and productive due to the use of the tools that facilitate this modality.

Disadvantages

  • The use of fertilizers, phytosanitary products and chemicals, which are causing a deterioration in the resistance that plants naturally have to pests and a wide variety of diseases.

  • The fight against pests using pesticides and herbicide products will cause more and more attacks from parasites, which in turn forces the increase of chemicals to combat these parasites.

  • The end result is the progressive destruction of microbial flora, barren land, and groundwater contamination.
